Halloween is two weeks away and I’m sure if your kids are like mine were finding the perfect costume has been top of mind since the first of October. And we single moms are always looking for fun and affordable ways to treat our kids to the stuff they want. One of the best options I’ve found for coming up with costumes that are unique and satisfying is to “haunt” the aisles of your local thrift or consignment stores.
This year I visited the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Los Angeles and found items that were perfect for these great Scream-Worthy Halloween Costumes.

1. The Donald
While he is possibly the most talked-about and controversial figure in 2015, creating his doppelganger is quite simple. Find a great men’s suit, then pick up a wild comb-over wig at a costume shop and you’ve got a presidential candidate in the making and a costume for less than $30
2. Joy or Sadness From Inside Out
The animated Pixar movie was a huge hit this year, and the two key characters, Joy and Sadness are the ideal 2015 Halloween costumes. Pick a bright blue dresses and accessories for sadness, and cheerful yellow ensembles for Joy.
3. Walking Dead Zombie
With the mega-popularity of the show The Walking Dead, zombies are a standout costume sure to elicit some screams. Uncover zombie-worthy shirts, pants, shoes and hats and rip them up to your hearts content.
4. Peggy Olsen or Don Draper From Mad Men
Many are mourning the end of an era with the final episode of Mad Men this year. Go back in time and discover some hidden treasures from the 60s and 70s to bring Don and Peggy back to life.
5. Luke Skywalker or Princess Leia
With movie #7 hitting the theatres this December, Halloween 2015 will see several iterations of Star Wars characters. Stick to the classics with white from head to toe for both Luke and Leia.
Shopping at a thrift or consignment store will not only allow your kids to rock their Halloween costume, you’ll not only be saving money but preserving the environment as well. When you buy or donate second hand goods at a thrift store you are keeping clothes, textiles, electronics and books out of landfills, and that is very green of you.
