VITA B BENE’S

Vitamin B is the secret mood enhancer, it curbs tension, moodiness, irritability and depression. Research shows folate and vitamin B6 and B12 can help with memory problems and alzheimers disease. Vitamin B6 helps make the most of your brains neurotransmitters, including serotonin, the happy hormone. Other good sources of the B’s are oysters, egg yolks, walnuts, bananas and lamb’s liver.

SAFFRON

The second food mood booster is saffron. A bright yellow or yellow/orange spice it is a staple in Indian, Moroccan and Asian recipes. It is believed that crocin and safranal are the active components of the plant. According to a study published in 2005 those in the research program participated in a 6 week trial given 30 mg of dried saffron extract and reported significant improvement in depressive symptoms.

FISH FOOD

Finally, research indicates that people with lower blood levels of EPA and DHA, two fatty acids found in several types of fish, are more likely to show symptoms of depression. Several studies have suggested that Omega 3’s smooth out mood swings of bipolar disorder. Another great source of Omega 3 is flaxseed oil.
